Building in Halton Region: what to know

Permits and approvals

Each municipality issues its own building permits: the Town of Oakville, the City of Burlington, the Town of Milton and the Town of Halton Hills. Halton Region manages regional roads and water and wastewater services. Conservation Halton or Credit Valley Conservation reviews work near creeks and the Lake Ontario shoreline, depending on location, and parts of Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills fall within the Niagara Escarpment Plan area, where a Niagara Escarpment Commission development permit may be needed.

Site conditions and logistics

Older lakeside neighbourhoods in Oakville and Burlington often involve mature trees, heritage districts and tree protection by-laws, while growth areas in Milton and Halton Hills bring new servicing and subdivision conditions.

Ontario Building Code

The 2024 Ontario Building Code took effect on January 1, 2025. We work with your designers to make sure drawings, barrier-free design and life-safety systems meet the current Code.

Winter construction

Frost, cold-weather concrete, temporary heat and shorter days affect cost and schedule. We plan for the season from the start, so winter never becomes a surprise.
